New birth control gel will protect us from unwanted pregnancies

Besides the well-known means of preventing pregnancy as birth control pills, coils, condoms, birth control already exists and gel. Still tests for its effectiveness, but the first stage has already passed, reports the BBC.

Contraceptive gel has been developed by experts from the American pharmaceutical company and is expected to hit the market within 5 years.

How does it work? The gel is rapidly absorbed by the skin, causing the abdomen, hips, shoulders or arms. In the first phase of research took part 18 women aged between 20 and 40 years. After seven months, during which volunteers used the gel, none became pregnant. During the tests the researchers found that the optimum daily dose should not exceed three milligrams.
